Evidence based therapies for
Emotional and Behavioral Disorders
ART THERAPY
Art therapy is a powerful tool in treatment to help children, teens, and adults to voice their experiences and emotions. It is used to help with an array of disorders such as anxiety and depressive disorders, ADHD, grief and loss, trauma and life’s transitions. Art therapy is different than other types of therapy because symbolism is used to illustrate feelings and thoughts. This is important for people who find it hard to talk about their feelings such as a young child who may not have the word capacity to describe how they are feeling or an introvert. I am a firm believer that children and adults often speak with their behaviors. Expressive art helps voice strong emotions, words, experiences, and feelings in a personal and concrete manner.
PLAY THERAPY
Research acknowledges play therapy as a developmentally appropriate intervention for ages 3-12 years old. Play therapy is the best method for meeting and responding to the mental health needs of children. It is used to treat a variety of diagnosis such as ADHD, social problems, learning disabilities, behavioral disorders. It also helps treat anxiety, depression, grief, transitions in life, anger and so much more. Therapeutic play normally takes place in a safe playroom where very few expectations are set for the child. Emotions and experiences are expressed through a natural, self-guided, and self-healing process. The therapist observes the child’s choices, decisions, and play style for treatment. I believe connecting and communicating through play therapy is the building block to any relationship with children. I use my expertise in teaching and therapeutic skills to improve the emotional, behavioral, and overall wellbeing of children.
COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY
If you change your thoughts and behaviors this can have a positive change on your life is the premise of cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT is a form of therapy that focuses on solutions, encouraging clients to challenge distorted cognitions and change patterns of behavior that are destructive. CBT is appropriate for people of all ages, including children, adolescents, and adults. Research supports the usage of CBT for numerous conditions, such as anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and many others.
SOLUTION FOCUSED THERAPY
SFT is one of the leading approaches used with adults, children, and teens because it addresses diversity and an array of mental health disorders. SFT focuses on the present moment, goal-directed, and focuses on solutions rather than the problems themselves. The SFT approach believes that clients have some knowledge of what would make their lives better based on the experience of solving many other problems in the past. This self-awareness will assist in resolving the current problem. SFT promotes personal growth, awareness, and application of problem solving skills.
EXISTENTIAL THERAPY
Existential Therapy is a highly successful treatment for youth and adults struggling with anxiety, depression, addiction and a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues. The purpose of existential therapy is to encourage clients to take ownership of their lives, to find true meaning, and to live fully in the present. One of the primary aims of existential therapy is to help people develop personal development by empowering them to face the unknowns of life, embracing the freedom of choice humans have, and taking full responsibility for their choices. This technique can help clients find meaning in the face of uncertainty by choosing to think and act responsibly while confronting negative internal thoughts versus external forces. Creativity, love, authenticity, and free will are common tools that support self-transformation.
